Jackson recently began the first phase of a £27 million flood defence scheme to improve the entire 30km length of the Ouse Washes flood bank for the Environment Agency.
The project, which involves raising the embankment by 600-800mm along its entire length, requires 270,000m3 of imported clay – enough to fill 108 olympic sized swimming pools.
Ordinarily, this clay would have to be imported by road, placing unavoidable strain on the local network. However, by working closely with a local supplier and landowners the team from Jackson has gained permission to construct temporary roads and bailey bridges within the site perimeter, which link the local quarries to the works area. This means that in years two and three of the programme, all fill material can be run in directly from source to the embankment raising works without putting a single lorry on the public highway.
Work in years two and three involves the largest section of the project, so the solution has eliminated over 27,000 lorry movements and saved an estimated 730 tonnes of carbon massively reducing the environmental impact, and impact of the necessary works on the local road network and local communities.
