Media students from Suffolk New College have taken part in a unique work experience programme with Jackson Civil Engineering.
Adam Day and Michael Barnard, both studying a media foundation course at Suffolk New College, partnered with Jackson’s in-house PR team to produce a video illustrating the size and scale of the company. The aim of the work experience programme was to highlight the broad range of career opportunities available in large businesses. Richard Neall, Chief Executive explains: “Jackson is part of One Group Construction, and we employ over 500 people across the country. Yes we’re a construction firm, but our business is made up of so many different professionals, with wide ranging expertise. We think it’s really important to promote that, and encourage young people into the industry from a vast range of skill sets.” The students visited several construction sites across the country to shoot footage for the video, which aimed to capture a typical day’s work for the firm. Adam said: “Jackson works round the clock, so the video aimed to capture all that activity in a 24 hour window.” “I saw this as the perfect opportunity for me to explore my career options, and I realised how much I enjoyed working in a hands-on environment. It’s also given me the chance to put all my learning into practice.” Michael said: “Working with the in-house team has really opened my eyes to the different career opportunities available. It’s made me realise you don’t have to go down conventional routes if you want to work in media, because every industry needs our skills.” Glen White, Media Foundation Tutor at Suffolk New College said: “We’re really grateful to Jackson for giving our students a real world opportunity to work with them professionally, and to produce an industry quality promotional video.”
